If you are currently in Class 12 or the final year of graduation, read the eligibility section of the NIFT Admission Guidelines 2027 and the information bulletin carefully before you apply, as the documents you must show at the later stages are spelt out there.
What is the NIFT 2027 exam pattern?
Stage 1 has two papers. The General Ability Test (GAT) is computer based, and the Creative Ability Test (CAT) is a pen and paper drawing test. Correct answers in GAT carry +1 and wrong answers carry a penalty of 0.25.
| Programme | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Final weightage |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Des | GAT (100 questions, 120 minutes) + CAT (3 hours) | Situation Test | GAT 30%, CAT 50%, Situation Test 20% |
| B.FTech | GAT Section A (100 questions) + Section B (50 questions) | None | GAT Section A 30%, Section B 70% |
| M.Des | GAT + CAT | Personal Interview | GAT 30%, CAT 40%, Interview 30% |
| MFM and MFTech | GAT (150 questions, 3 hours) | Personal Interview | GAT 70%, Interview 30% |
The Situation Test for B.Des is an offline, hands-on round where you build a 3D model from materials NIFT provides and write a short note on your concept. Missing Stage 2 leads to disqualification, so plan for it from the start.
How to apply for NIFT 2027: step by step
- Go to the NIFTEE page on the NTA exams portal (exams.nta.nic.in/niftee) and open the form that matches you: UG and PG, NLEA, Artisans, NRI or Ph.D.
- Register with your own mobile number and email ID. Only one application per category is allowed, and duplicate forms can be cancelled.
- Fill in personal, academic and programme details, and choose four exam cities in order of preference.
- Upload a recent photograph (JPG, 10 to 200 KB, white background) and your signature (JPG, 10 to 50 KB), plus category or UDID certificates if they apply to you.
- Pay the fee online and download the confirmation page. Keep the transaction ID safe.
- Check every detail during the correction window (22 to 25 November 2026) if you spot a mistake.
What should NIFT aspirants do next?
- Apply this week: do not wait for 16 November, when portals usually slow down.
- Practise GAT daily: go through the GAT syllabus in the information bulletin and solve timed mock papers, keeping the 0.25 negative marking in mind.
- Sketch every day: for B.Des and M.Des, the CAT carries more weight than GAT, so timed drawing practice matters.
- Try a few 3D models at home: paper, card and fabric models help you get comfortable before the Situation Test.
- Keep documents ready: OBC (NCL) and EWS certificates must be issued on or after 1 April 2026, as per NTA’s FAQs.
