Mumbai Dabbawala, Meet & Greet Session at PDPU

School of Liberal Studies-PDPU invited Mumbai Dabbawala for a meet and greet session to share their journey of struggles, success and solutions on 21 February 2020.

Mr. Ritesh Andre, one of the directors of Mumbai Dabbawala and the great grandson of the founder late Sri Mahedeo Havaji Bacheche shared the journey and work of Mumbai Dabbawal, an organization which has become a case study for management students and Gurus. In an engaging conversation, Mr. Ritesh explained how they consider work as workshop and the principle of customer satisfaction lies at the heart of their work. He explained the meticulous coding system on the dabba and how the supply chain works. Honoured with number of awards and invited internationally, Dabbawalas have earned Six Sigma and more than five thousand certifications for their exemplary execution. Students asked questions on the recruitment and training of dabbawalas and how during rainy season they deliver the lunch boxes.

The Director General of PDPU Professor S. Sundar Manoharan talked about the popularity Mumbai Dabbawala’s have gained at international level and have inspired many companies at Six Sigma level also. The students of PDPU asked many questions and actively interacted with the representatives. The representatives of Mumbai Dabbawala appreciated the participation of the students of PDPU.

About Mumbai Dabbawala:

Since 1890, Dressed in white outfit and traditional Gandhi Cap, Mumbai Army of 5,000 Dabbawalas fulfilling the hunger of almost 200,000 Mumbaikar with home-cooked food that is lug between home and office daily. For more than a century the team have been part of this grime-ridden metropolis-of-dreams.

The lunchboxes are picked up in the late morning, delivered predominantly using bicycles and railway trains, and returned empty in the afternoon. They are also used by meal suppliers in Mumbai, who pay them to ferry lunchboxes with ready-cooked meals from central kitchens to customers and back

In 2010, Harvard Business School added the case study The Dabbawala System: On-Time Delivery, Every Time to their compendium for its high level of service with a low-cost and simple operating system.
